BioDioRama

Privacy & licence

Your work stays on your computer. Nothing you make or upload is sent to us.

Your work and your photos

BioDioRama runs in your browser. Your scenes, figures and settings are saved in your browser, and every export is made on your computer. Photos you use with Remove background or Make icon are processed on your computer too — they are never uploaded and never used for training. Clearing your browser's data deletes your saved work, so keep copies of anything important.

The AI that finds the subject in a photo

It is IS-Net by Xuebin Qin and colleagues (Apache 2.0), from the rembg project (MIT), run with Microsoft's ONNX Runtime. Printed text in photos (labels, displays) is read with Tesseract.js and Tesseract's English model (both Apache 2.0). Both are downloaded from this website once and then run offline on your computer.

When BioDioRama goes online

Only when you add or search for real scientific data — proteins (RCSB PDB, AlphaFold), molecules (PubChem), reference organs (Human Reference Atlas) or reference images and icons (Wikimedia Commons — including Servier Medical Art and NIH BioArt — Bioicons, Reactome, PhyloPic, Health Icons, SciDraw via Zenodo, and open icon sets via Iconify). Your browser then asks that service directly for what you searched for.

Visit statistics

Only if you press Accept on the notice BioDioRama shows on your first visit, we count visits with Google Analytics (which pages are opened, device type, approximate region) to see how BioDioRama is used — never for advertising. Until you accept, nothing from Google is loaded and no cookies are set; after you accept, its cookies are kept for at most 13 months. It never receives your projects, figures or photos, and BioDioRama sets no other cookies.

Checking…

Your choice is remembered in this browser, and you can change it here or with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page at any time; turning analytics off also removes its cookies. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control, analytics never loads.

Using what you make

Everything you make with BioDioRama is yours to use — in papers, theses, posters, slides, teaching and websites. A few library items come from open scientific data that asks for a credit; the 3D Studio's Figure credits gives you the exact lines.

Share-alike items. The mouse anatomy models built from the Digimouse CT atlas (they have "Digimouse" in their names) and a few molecule details (from ChEMBL) are under CC BY-SA, a "share-alike" licence: a figure that includes them should be credited and shared under the same licence (CC BY-SA). If your journal or publisher needs other terms, leave those items out — Figure credits shows when a figure contains one.
